I would normally never lay hands on a turtle in the wild, but this little one was in a bit of trouble. A fishing hook was lodged very firmly in its mouth, trailing a length of fishing line down its body. The turtle was constantly stopping to try and wipe its face with one flipper in a futile attempt to get rid of the line. The hook would have eventually rusted out, but not before causing a huge amount of pain and frustration to the turtle as well as putting it in all sorts of secondary dangers. It took me three dives to finally catch the turtle and bring it to the surface, where we could use a pair of pliers to pull the hook out. Unfortunately the camera battery died before we finished, so we didn’t capture that happy moment when it took off with a fresh burst of speed! Filming by @bentinhomassaro, turtle dentistry by @deanfreediver and a helpful diveboat captain, and thank you Tam for alerting me to the turtle’s plight!
